DES Bullying Prevention Program
At Davidson Elementary we use the STEPS TO RESPECT: BULLY PREVENTION PROGRAM to decrease bullying and build a safe, caring and respectful school environment. Through this program we teach children how to find and make friends, ways to join a group, and methods to show respect. We also focus on the three R's of bullying prevention: R e c o g n i z i n g, R e f u s i n g, and R e p o r t i n g.
R E C O G N I Z I N G:
Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.
Questions to ask yourself if you're not sure someone is bullying.
R E F U S I N G:
Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.
Questions to ask yourself if you're not sure someone is bullying.
- Is it fair?
- Is it one-sided?
- Does the behavior repeat?
- How does it feel to you?
- Is someone using their power to hurt or leave someone else out on purpose?
R E F U S I N G:
- Ask yourself if it's safe to speak out assertively.
If it is safe to speak out then: - Stand up straight and look the individual in the eyes;
- Use clear, firm words that mean "Stop"
- Label the behavior (e.g., "That's bullying.")
- Walk away calmly (don't engage in bullying behavior yourself).
- Report to an adult immediately if you or someone else is in danger or "Refusing" doesn't work.
